explanatory gap Flashcards
Explanatory Gap
The explanatory gap is ametaphysical gap betweenphysical phenomena andconscious experience (seeimage). There are differentlevels of how something can beexplained. Note that thisexplanatory gap also applies toother problems, e.g., clinicaldepression, behavior ofanimals. This led DavidChalmers to distinguish theeasy vs. the hard problem
The hard problem en the easy problem
is the question how experience itself exists. The easy problem of consciousness can be solved by used science, like how attention works. The hard problem is for example: what is it like to be, how do physical processes interact with subjective experience
New Mysterianism
The hard problem is unfixable
Chalmers, dualism, quantum physics.
Trying to solve the hard problem
Dehaene
The easy problem needs to be tackled first
Miller
More hard problems need to be identified
Dennett, Chrurchland
There is no hard problem
