Voyage Planning Flashcards
How much is a common Fuel Oil Bunker Safety reserve?
15%
What is the recommended minimum amount of portable water to be onboard?
MGN 525 states at least 2 days worth
What does SFC stand for?
Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC)
What are the units of SFC?
kg / kW.hr (kilograms per kilowatt-hour)
How would you workout the daily fuel consumption?
Daily fuel consumption (tonnes)
(SFC (kg/kW hr) x Power (kW) x [24 / 1000]
Note: Multiply by 24 to convert from hours to days;
Divide by 1000 to convert from kilograms to tonnes
or
Daily fuel consumption (tonnes)
(Δ 2/3 x V 3)/
Fuel coefficient
How would you workout Voyage fuel consumption?
Number of days = Distance travelled (nautical miles) / Speed (knots) Voyage
fuel consumption = Consumption per day x Number of days
Explain propeller slip and how you can work it out?
The difference between the actual distance travelled by the ship and the theoretical distance moved by one revolution of the propeller is called slip.
So if the observed distance
by GPS was 1050 Nm but the theoretical distance from engine revolutions was 1120 Nm then
slip (usually given as %)
Revolution distance - Actual distance / Revolution distance x 100
1120 – 1050 / 1120 x 100 = 6.25 %
When looking at an SFC Curve, where is the optimum point?
It is the lowest point on the curve
What does MCR stand for and what does it mean?
Maximum continuous rating (MCR)
Normal sea speed or cruising speed. Which is the speed determined as that required to normally operate the ship. The fuel consumption is higher than that at the optimum speed.
What is Maximum speed?
The maximum speed at which the ship can travel. The range is known as the ‘emergency band’, and may be used to operate in emergency
situations.
