Q

What are the 4 different Power Card Analysis and what are they used for?

A
  • PV diagrams to establish charge air compression,
  • Light Spring Diagrams
    to determine Scavenge effectiveness,
  • Draw cards to establish combustion pressure versus crank angle
  • Delta P diagram to establish rate of change of combustion pressure against crank angle

Q

What are some of the functions of a Pressure-Volume Diagram?

A

To monitor and analyse the following;
- Condition of the engine
- Combustion process
- Engine timing
- Measure total power, useful power and non-useful power
- Measure peak pressure and angle of peak pressure
- Measure MEP - Mean Effective Power

Q

Explain SEEMP?

A

Ships Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) is for all vessels above 400GT. It is for the vessel and the crew to increase efficiency and reduce emissions and carbon footprint. This can be achieved by;

  • Economical Speed
  • Economical speed versus draft / CPP pitch angle / draught
  • Trim
  • Good quality fuel (cetane value, density and viscosity)
  • Multi engine configurations
  • Regular maintenance
  • Trailing or locking one shaft
  • Cargo distribution
  • Use of low power lighting
  • Regular Hull cleans
  • Regular Propeller cleaning
  • Use of stabilisers
  • Educating crew to switch off unnecessary equipment
  • Wavelength versus ships speed and weather (route planning)
