- Statutory Surveys and issue the certificates required by the International and Flag States law.
- They conduct measurement surveys in build

- Assist in accident investigations
Which surveys do Classification Society Surveyors act to maintain the class and statutory requirements?
- Supervise new build processes at key stages in the ship yard
- Oversee Conversions and modifications to the vessel
- Conduct statutory surveys when authorised by Flag State
- Issue certificates on behalf of flag state
- Represent the Classification Society on occasions of damage or Loss
Explain Statutory Requirements?
Statutory surveys are surveys required by flag state merchant shipping regulations in most cases giving effect to IMO Instruments
Explain an Initial Survey?
Is a detailed examination, including tests of a ship and its equipment. The survey will include a complete examination of the structure, equipment, systems, fittings, arrangements and materials of the ship.
What is an Intermediate Survey?
Is an examination of the ship and its equipment at specified periods between periodical surveys. It can be within 6 months either side of the mid-point. i.e. between 24 months and 36 months.
What is a mandatory annual survey?
Annual general examination of a ship and its equipment. It’s to confirm that the ship and its equipment remain satisfactory for the service. It’s required within 3 months before or after the anniversary date.
What is a periodical survey?
A survey for renewal of a certificate.
What is a periodical Inspection?
A general examination, under the Load Line Convention, of the ship and its equipment to ensure that no alteration has been made.
What is an additional survey?
Is a survey, either general or partial, after a repair resulting from an investigation or whenever any repairs or renewals are made
What is a general inspection?
In the case of safety equipment includes checking validity dates of pyrotechnics, life rafts, extinguishers, etc. Expanded into a detailed examination if either the ship or its equipment is found in a poor condition. Can also be carried out when a ship’s name is changed
What does HSSC stand for and what is it set to achieve?
Harmonised System of Survey and Certification (HSSC)
Seeks to standardise the period of validity and the intervals between surveys for the nine main convention certificates to a maximum period of validly for all certificates to five years. In so doing it aims to simplify the survey and certification process.
