What’s is PSSA and what does it mean?
Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) is an area that needs special protection through action by IMO because of its significance for recognised ecological or socio-economic or scientific reasons and which may be vulnerable to damage by international maritime activities.
List the adopted PSSA’s
- The Great Barrier Reef, Australia (designated a PSSA in 1990)
- The Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago in Cuba (1997)

What are the regulations for a vessel above 400gt discharging oil outside a special area?
- The ship is underway
- Discharged oil content is less than 15ppm
- Vessel has an oily water separator filtering system
What are the regulations for a vessel above 400gt discharging oil inside a special area?
- The ship is underway
- Discharged oil content is less than 15ppm
- Vessel has an oily water separator filtering system with an automatic 15ppm stopping device.
What should be included in the SOPEP plan?
- The procedure to be followed by the master or other persons having charge of the ship to report an oil pollution incident
- The list of authorities or persons to be contacted in the event of an oil pollution incident
- A detailed description of the action to be taken immediately by persons onboard to reduce or control the discharge of oil
- The procedure and point of contact on the ship for co-ordinating shipboard action with national and local authorities in combating the pollution
What does SOPEP stand for?
Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan
What does IOPPC Stand for and who requires it?
International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate
Tankers of 150gt which goes on international voyages.
Any vessel above 400gt which goes on international voyages.
Valid for 5 years subject to annual and intermediate surveys.
Explain how a single stage oily water separator works?
A coaelscer filter works by using a material with an extremely low coefficient of friction (PTFE) that allows oil droplets to be molecularly attracted to the filter and rise upwards when enough gather momentum. The water however will not adhere to the filter and falls (as it is more dense) to the bottom and run away as free water.
What are the 9 categories of entry into the Oil Record Book?
A Ballasting or cleaning of oil fuel tanks
B Discharge of dirty ballast or cleaning water from oil fuel tanks
C Collection and disposal of oil residues (sludge)
D Non-automatic discharge overboard or disposal otherwise of bilge water which has accumulated in machinery spaces
E Automatic discharge overboard or disposal otherwise of bilge water which has accumulated in machinery spaces
F Condition of oil discharge monitoring and control system
G Accidental or other exceptional discharges of oil
H Bunkering of fuel or bulk lubricating oil
I Additional operational procedures and general remarks

- Type approved and certified Sewage Treatment Plant
- Sewage certificate relating to the plants test results
- Treated sewage can be discharged 3 nautical miles from land
- Untreated sewage can be discharged 12 nautical miles from land
What is the maximum discharge rate for untreated sewage over 12 nautical miles?
3 cubes per hour
