Q

Explain how a single stage oily water separator works?

A

A coaelscer filter works by using a material with an extremely low coefficient of friction (PTFE) that allows oil droplets to be molecularly attracted to the filter and rise upwards when enough gather momentum. The water however will not adhere to the filter and falls (as it is more dense) to the bottom and run away as free water.

17
Q

What is SOx Emissions?

A

The amount of Sulphur content of fuel. Reducing Sulphur content will result in lower particulate matter emissions. It is currently capped at 0.50%.

18
Q

What is SECA?

A

SECA is SOx Emission Controlled Areas. This is areas where the Sulphur content is further reduced. These are capped at 0.10%.

19
Q

Explain NOx regulations for new engines?

A

Diesel Engines are only allowed to produce a set amount of NOx emissions at certain RPMs.

They are split into Tier I, Tier II and Tier III. Tier I is for vessels built between Jan 2000 and Jan 2011. Tier II is Jan 2011 till Jan 2016. Tier III Jan 2016 onwards.

From Tier I to III there is an 80% reduction in NOx from the use of new equipment such as exhaust gas recirculation and Catalytic reduction. (HUGS and Xeamos)

20

22
Q

What are the 5 categories of SEEMP?

A
  • Fuel efficient operations
  • Optimised ship handling
  • Hull and propulsion
