Bureau Commander - Deputy Chief
Reports directly to the Chief Deputy of Administrative Operations. Holds the title of Fire Marshall. Maintains memberships on national committees and organizations for the purpose of achieving consistency in application of systems, methods and policies. Providing liaison with other departments of City government, outside agencies, trade and industrial organizations.
Section Commander - Battalion Chief
Supervises and directs Unit Commanders. Serves on various federal, state, local, and Department committees. Attends conferences, seminars, institutes, and meetings concerning their areas of responsibility.
Unit Commander - Captain
Directs unit activities and maintains its overall effectiveness. Interprets state and local fire prevention laws and directs their application.
Fire Inspectors 1 & 2
Enforcing fire safety laws and ordinances in complex occupancies. Interpreting and applying, on a technical level, fire prevention regulations and procedures. Reviews building plans to ensure compliance with the Fire Code.
Fire Safety Officer
All uniformed members of the Fire Prevention Bureau that maintain the rank of Fire Captain and/or Fire Inspector. Performs fire and life safety functions during filming, special events, festivals, firework displays etc. in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones
Metro Rail Coordinator
BC that interfaces with appropriate outside agencies and the Fire Department and fulfill the following responsibilities. Facilitate the interchange of info. Make evaluations and recommendations relative to the designs, construction, and operation of the Metro Rail Transit Project.
Assistant Bureau Commander - Assistant Chief
Assistant Fire Marshall. serves as an executive assistant to the Bureau Commander, and includes: Serving as the Acting Bureau Commander and Fire Marshal, and assisting in the formulation of Bureau policies. Provides liaison to other departments of City government, outside agencies, and trade and industrial organizations.
Legal Liaison Unit
Prepare unresolved violation cases for submission to the City Attorneys office for legal action. Coordinate legal action and court cases regarding violations of the Fire Code. Assimilate evidence and information for use in legal action.
Research Unit
Assists the Fire Marshals office and be its support staff. Conducts research on the behavior, detection and extinguishment of fire. Testing devices submitted for Departmental approval.
Industrial And Commercial Section
Has inspection responsibility for complex and large industrial and commercial occupancies. Inspects major industrial and commercial occupancies enforcing fire and life safety regulations. Authorizing the issuance of fire permits, under Division 4 of the Fire Code.
High Rise Unit
Supervised by a Captain 2. Does annual High Rise Building Inspections. investigates complaints. Asbestos Abatement- Inspects asbestos Abatement sites for compliance with applicable Fire Code provisions. Fire and Safety Education- The training and educating of personnel in high-rise industrial, commercial, institutional and governmental facilities.
Industrial and Commercial Units
Inspection responsibility for all major industrial and commercial complexes over 40,000 square feet. Having a division 4 permit, and the older high-rise buildings over 75 feet not having a complex pumping system.
Brush Clearance Unit
Enforces Section 57.21.07 of the Los Angeles Municipal Code concerning brush and/or hazardous vegetation. Formulates plans, policies and procedures to facilitate enforcement of brush and grass clearance laws.
Public Safety Section
BC is Commander of the Public Safety Section. Primary Responsibility is directed to those occupancies where safety to life is of paramount concern.
Public Assemblage Unit
Responsible for inspecting public assemblage occupancies in the Metro, West LA and Harbor areas. It enforces fire and life safety regulation in public assemblage occupancies including restaurants, nightclubs, stadiums, theaters, large hotels and apartments (6 stories or more, non high rise) and motion picture and T.V. studios.
Schools and Churches Unit
Is responsible for public, private and parochial schools, universities, vocational, adult schools, colleges, large churches, childcare and adult day care occupancies. Enforces fire and life safety regulations as the apply to schools and churches.
Institutions Unit
Responsible for hospitals, detention facilities, residential care facilities and health care facilities. Enforces fire and life safety regulations as they apply to institutional occupancies.
Valley Public Safety Unit
Responsible for the performance of all Public Safety Section functions within the San Fernando Valley. One inspector is responsible for Large State owned facilities which include the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Campuses of U.C.L.A., C.S.U.N., AND C.S.U.L.A.
Film Unit
Created to handle the large amount of location filming in the City of Los Angeles. Regulates pyrotechnic special effects used in filming.
Technical Section
Responsible for plan review for new construction projects, coordination and oversight for the Division 4 and 5 Fire Permit programs. Administers the Division 6 Certificate of fitness for the testing of fire protection equipment.
Cupa Manager
Certified Unified Program Agency- Supervises the RMPP Specialist, Industrial Hygienist and Data Entry Management/Accounts Receivable personnel.
CAL ARP Unit
Administers and enforces the State law requiring businesses handling Acutely Hazardous Materials to prepare and submit a Risk Management and Prevention Program. RMPP. Identifies RMPP facilities. Reviews technical engineering studies and off-site consequence modeling.
Data Management Unit
Provides staff support for the Technical Section. Data entry maintenance of hard copy files and computer data base files, process requests for information based on community right to know legislation.
Environmental Task Force
Supervised by a Captain 2. Responsible for supervising and directing the Unit Commanders of the Underground Tank Plan Check Unit, Underground Storage Tank Unit, Hazardous Materials Unit, Construction Services Task Force.
