Volcanos Flashcards
What is a volcano?
An erupting vent through which molten rock surfaces.
What is viscosity?
A material’s resistance to flow.
What factor affects viscosity?
Dissolved gases
Why do dissolved gases affect viscosity?
Gasses expand within magma as it nears the earth’s surface due to decreasing pressure.
What is mafic lava?
Very, hot low silica and low viscosity.
What is andesitic lava flow?
lava flow remains close to the vent.
What is a cinder cone?
A cone-shaped pile of tephra.
What is a stratovolcano?
Large, cone-shaped volcano. Composed of altering layers of lava and tephra
What are the threats with lava?
Completely destroy immovable objects, but rare for lava flows to kill people.
What are the hazards of explosive eruptions?
Pyroclastic flow
Tephra fallout
Lahars
What is tephra?
Ash, rocks, and rock fragments are produced by a volcanic eruption.
What are the dangers of tephra fallout?
Structural damage, and can cause asphyxiation.
What is a lahar?
Volcanic derived mudflow.
