Sedimentary Rocks Flashcards
What are sedimentary rocks?
Rocks comprised of sediment from weathered down rocks.
What are the three classes of sedimentary rocks?
Clastic, Organic, Biochemical
What is a clastic sedimentary rock?
Made from weathered rock fragments.
What are organic sedimentary rocks?
The carbon-rich remains of plants.
What are biochemical sedimentary rocks?
Minerals that crystalize directly from water?
What is erosion?
Removal of sediment from weathering site.
What is transport?
Movement of sediment by wind, water, and ice.
What is deposition?
Transport of sediment ends.
What is lithification?
Transformation of sediment into sedimentary rocks.
What is the lithification process?
Bury it!
Compact it!
Cement it!
What is grain size?
The average diameter of the clast
What do angularity and sphericity tell us about the rock?
Indicates the degree of transport.
What are evaporites?
Created from evaporated salt water.
What is travertine?
Calcium carbonate precipitated from groundwater where it reaches the surface.
