Earth Flashcards
What is a solar system?
A sun, planets, moons, and other objects.
What was the interior of the proto earth like?
It heated up and became soft.
How did the core differentiate?
Into an Iron/ Nickle core and a stony mantel.
What are the two kinds of crust?
Ocean and Continental
What are the two parts of the mantel?
Upper
Lower
What are the two parts of the core?
Inner and Outer
The Mohorovicic discontinuity marks the what of the crust?
The base
What is continental crust mostly made out of?
Granite
What is ocean crust mostly made out of?
Basalt
Which of the two crusts is denser?
Ocean crust
How are mountain belts formed?
related to tectonic processes
Are mountain belts young or old?
Young the have not had much erosion
What are shields?
the relatively flat centners of continents.
Are shields young or old?
Shields are old because they have been eroded.
Where is the new ocean crust formed?
Ocean ridges
What are trenches?
Areas of subduction where ocean crust is consumed (active areas of tectonically and volcanically)
What is the Earth’s mantel?
The rock layer between the crust and the core.
What are the two components of the upper mantle?
Lithosphere
Asthenosphere
What is the Lithosphere?
The ridged outer layer of Earth that extends slightly into the mantle.
What is the Asthenosphere?
Low strength layer of Earth below the Lithosphere.
What is the Mesosphere?
The lower mantle is where rocks are very hot and capable of gradual flow.
The outer core is…?
A liquid
What does the outer core generate?
A convective flow within generates Earth’s magnetic field.
What are the requirements to produce Earth’s magnetic field?
It can conduct electricity and is mobile.
