Volcanism Flashcards
What is a restricted vent in the surface of the Earth through which grasses, hot rock fragments, and lava are ejected?
Volcanism
What is a funnel-like depression found on top of active volcano?
Crater
What are the types of volcanic eruptions?
- Quiet or Effusive
- Violent
- Destructive
What is a hot molten rock below the Earth’s surface?
Magma
What is a reservoir of molten rock but when it comes to the surface it is called?
Lava
What are the 3 ways that magma can be generated?
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Structural Formations
What is the increase in temperature within tur depths of the Earth?
Geothermal Gradient
What is the main agent in producing violent eruptions?
Water
Volcanism echoes the name ______ which means the Ancient Roman God of Fire and Volcanoes.
“Vulcan”
What refers to “Pluto” which is the classical ruler of the underworld?
Plutonism
What is a geologic theory that igneous rocks forming the Earth, originated from intrusive magmatic activity with a continuing gradual process of weathering and erosions?
Volcanism or Plutonism
What are the 3 kinds of volcano?
- Composite Volcano
- Shield Volcano
- Cinder Cone Volcano
It is a volcano which is cone-shape.
Composite Volcano
What volcano which are formed from pyroclastic materials from another volcano?
Composite Volcano
What is the most violent among other volcanoes?
Composite Volcano
Give an example of Composite Volcano.
Mt. Pinatubo
It is a volcano which has a mound-like shape.
Shield Volcano
What volcano is formed from basaltic lava that erupted from a volcano?
Shield Volcano
Give an example of Shield Volcano.
The Mauna Loa in Hawaii
It is a smaller cone-shaped volcano.
Cinder Cone Volcano
What volcano is formed from rock fragments from another volcano?
Cinder Cone Volcano
Guve an example of Cinder Cone Volcano.
Mt. Paricutin in Mexico
From the 200 volcanoes in the Philippines, how many volcanoes are considered active?
23
How can you tell if a volcano is active?
When it has erupted within historic times and is capable of erupting anytime.
Give an example of active volcanoes?
Mt. Mayon, Mt. Taal, Mt. Kanlaon
How can you tell if a volcano is inactive?
If it has not erupted within historic times and has no possibility of erupting.
What volcanoes that are has not erupted within historic times but can possibly erupt anytime?
Dormat Volcano
Give an example of Dormat Volcano.
Mt. Apo and Mt. Arayat
Why do volcanoes erupt
- a volcano eruption happens when a part of the Earth’s crust sinks into the mantle.
- due to intensive heat, rock melts, and release gas causing the magma to rise in addition to extreme pressure building up surrounding the solid rocks.
- as heat and pressure becomes more intense, magma rises until it reaches the main vent and finally flow out of the crater.
