Endogenic Processes Flashcards
It comes from the greek word “meta” meaning change and “morph” meaning form. So it literally means “change of form”.
Metamorphism
What is Metamorphism?
In Geology, metamorphism is the process by which the composition, texture, and internal structure of the rocks are altered due to pressure, extreme heat, and even introduction of new chemical substance.
What are the 3 types of metamorphism?
- Dynamic
- Contact
- Regional
What type if metamorphism that involves deformation like shearing and grinding that takes place in the fault zone?
Dynamic
What type if metamorphism that occurs when a body or rock is intruded by magma?
Contact
What type if metamorphism which the alteration of rocks by both thermal and mechanical means over a whole region?
Regional
It is seen as an energy from the motion of the molecules of bodies such as Earth and maybe transferred by conduction, convection, or radiation.
Heat
It is a process by which heat or electricity is directly transmitted through a substance.
Conduction
It is the transfer of heat by the circulation or movement of the heated parts of a liquid or gas.
Convection
It is the transfer of heat in a wave-like motion through empty spaces.
Radiation
What are the 3 main sources of heat?
- Heat from the accretion of the Earth
- Fictional heating
- Heat from the decay of radioactive
What is the force per unit area that is placed in a rock?
Stress
What are the 3 types of stress?
- Compression
- Tension/Pulling Apart
- Shearing
It stresses act towards each other, pushing or squeezing rock together. It’s the most common stress.
Compression
It stresses act in opposite direction, pulling rocks apart or stretching it.
Tension/Pulling Apart
