Vocabulary 61-80 Flashcards
Distributed load
A load extending over the length or area of the supporting structural element
Lateral force
Force exerted at right angles to a wall (horizontally)
Compression
A squeezing force, being pushed together
Tension
A stretching force, pulled apart
Substructure
The structure below grade, forming the foundation of the building or other structure
Superstructure
The vertical extension of the building or other structure, above foundation
Planar structure
A structure which uses planes rather than posts and beams
Skeletal structure
A structure which uses a framework of columns and beams to transmit building loads down to the foundation
Structural grid
A grid defining the principal points or lines of support for a structural system, normally having repeating grids in two directions
Arch
A curved structure for spanning an opening to support a vertical load primarily by axial compression
Brace
Secondary structural member to resist lateral movement, to stabilize a structure; often diagonal, can be temporary or permanent
Beam
A straight horizontal structural member
Column
An upright structural member acting primarily in compression
Lintel
A beam that carries the load of a wall across a window or door opening
Truss
A linear arrangement of structural members, in the form of triangles, such that all forces are equal
