Cant strip
A strip rounding out the angle between a flat roof and a parapet
Veneer
A non structural facing of masonry or tile, attached to a back structure, visible on the exterior of a wall
Curtain wall
An exterior wall supported wholly by the structural frame of the building and carrying no loads other than its own weight and wind loads (dynamic)
A sheet material that is impervious to water or water vapour
Membrane
Air barrier
Material which seals the building so as to prevent air movement
Vapour barrier
A material of low permeance, as polyethylene film or aluminium foil, installed on the warm side of a construction to retard the transmission of moisture (water vapour) from the inside to where it can condense into water
Flashing
Pieces of sheet metal or other thin, impervious material installed
To prevent the passage of water into a structure from an angle or joint
Capillary break
A space between 2 solid surfaces, wide enough to prevent capillary action of water through the space
Weep hole
Openings in walls to allow water to escape, sloped towards the exterior
Thermal insulation
A material providing high resistance to heat flow fabricated in the form of batts, blankets, boards, or loose fill
