Vocabulary 131-140 Flashcards
Service switch
Main disconnect for the entire electrical system of a building, except for emergency power systems
Electrical panel
Board in a cabinet for the switches, fuses & circuit breakers for controlling/protecting branch circuits
Circuit
That part of the electrical system of a building that supplies current to a number of outlets for lighting and appliances
Circuit breakers
A switch that automatically interrupts an electric circuit to prevent excess current from damaging apparatus in the circuit causing a fire
Fire alarm
An electrical system installed in a building to automatically sound an alarm when activated by a fire-detection system
Fire detection system
A system of heat and smoke sensors for detecting the presence of fire and automatically signalling an alarm
Sprinkler
Pipes under the ceiling connected to a water supply, supplied with valves to open at a specific temperature
Standpipe
A water pipe extending vertically through a building to supply water to fire hoses located on every floor
Fire damper
A damper that closes an air duct in the event of fire to restrict the of fire and smoke, required where a duct penetrates a fire wall, fire-rated shaft, or other fire separation
F.R.R (fire resistance rating)
The time in hours a material or assembly can be expected to withstand expose to fire without collapsing, developing any openings which permit the passage of flame or hot gases, or exceeding a specified temperature on the side away from fire
