Vocab Essentials Flashcards
Transudate
Fluid, mostly protein with specific gravity < 1.020. Generally result in shift in colloid oncotic pressure: starvation, et al.
Exudate
Fluid containing cell debris and proteins with a specific gravity of > 1.020
Intrinsic Apoptotic pathway
Cellular damage results in cytochrome C in cytoplasm. Sets off caspase 9
Extrinsic Apoptotic pathway
Fas ligand (death receptor) sets off cascade via caspase 8 and 10
Diapedesis
Passage of leukocytes through capillary walls. Selectin : Sialyated GPTN. Integrin : ICAM
Endothelial activation
Pro coagulant state: release of Weible - Palade bodies that contain p-selectins and Von willebrand factor
Purulent exudate
Exudate that contains necrotic cell debris and neutrophils
Pluripotent stem cell
Can give rise to any of the three germ layers
Angiogenesis
Formation of new vessels from previous vessels
Healing; primary and secondary union
Primary: healing that doesn’t form a granuloma. No scar
Secondary: formation of a granuloma before healing
Inverse Agonist
Binds to receptor and has opposite effect of agonist (below baseline)
Antagonist
Binds to receptor, inhibits to baseline
Alpha/beta adrenergic receptors
Alpha: peripheral vasoconstriction, decrease Sm. muscle motility
Beta: heart contractility, decrease Sm. muscle motility
Stem cells
TPM:
Totipotent- can become anything
Pluripotent- can become any of the three germ layers
Multipotent- many tissue types
Healing: primary vs. secondary union
Primary: no scar/granulation tissue formation
