Rec: effective in prevention NOT treatment

Uses: increases muscle hypertrophy and decreases fatiguability
SE: electrolyte imbalance, potential kidney damage (murine models)
Rec: only useful for regular athletes, high intensity intermittent activity. Not for HS students
DHEA
Use: fixes everything
SE: screwing with androgens
Cind: men and women
Rec: no reason to. So don’t
Echinacea purpurea
Use: enhance immune function
SE: terrible taste
Cind: immune deficiency disorders, autoimmune diseases immunosuppressive therapy
Rec: helpful for limiting duration, not helpful in prevention
Energy drinks
Technically classified as supplement not food hence it’s not under FDA regulation
- Often contains significant amounts of caffeine and Guarana (more caffeine)
Feverfew
Uses: prophylaxis of migraine headaches
SE: mouth ulcers, GI, contact dermatitis, abortifacients
Cind: pregnancies, Anti-Coagulants, cross reactive with ragweed
Rec: some efficacy for prophylaxis of migraines
Fish oil/omega 3 FA
Uses: lots, lower CV risk factors
SE: interferes with anticoagulants, antiHTN
Cind: antiHTN, anticoagulant therapy
Rec: appears to be have an CV protective effect
Flaxseed
Use: laxative, hot flashes, cholesterol reduction
SE: constipation
Cind: none
Rec: appears to have some significant effect on tg and LDL
Flaxseed oil
Use: arthritis, high cholesterol
SE: constipation

Garlic
Ind: reduce cholesterol, heart health
