Vocab 8: Cavities and Membranes Flashcards
How does the serous membrane protect against infection?
By compartmentalizing the organs to prevent infections from spreading through direct contact / friction.
What is the pericardium?
The serosa surrounding the heart
What 2 cavities are inside the Ventral Cavity?
- The Abdomino Pelvic cavity 2.Thoracic Cavity
What 2 cavities are inside the AbdominoPelvic cavity?
- The abominal cavity (contains digestive organs) 2. The pelvic cavity
What is inside the pelvic cavity?
- urinary bladder 2.reproductive organs 3. rectum
What 2 cavities are inside the Dorsal Cavity?
- The cranial cavity (housing the brain) 2. The Vertebral Cavity (housing the spine)
What 3 cavities are inside the Thoracic cavity?
- The pleural cavity (lungs) 2. The mediastinum (divides the lungs) 3. Pericardial cavity (heart)
What is the serosa or serous membrane?
A thin, double layered membrane filled with serous fluid that protects the organs
What is the Parietal Serosa?
The outer portion of the serosa lining the cavity walls
What is the Visceral Serosa?
The inner portion of the serosa lining the external surface of the organs within the cavity.
What is the peritoneum?
The serosa covering the abdominal cavity walls and the organs that live there.
What is the pleura?
The serosa enclosing the lungs
What is the pericardium?
The serosa enclosing the heart
What organs are house in the Right Hypochondriac region?
The liver and gallbladder (what region?)
What organs are housed in the Left Hypochondriac region?
The spleen, part of the diaphragm (what region?)
