Vocab 6: Life-span Changes Flashcards
What are 4 signs of aging in humans 60 and above?
- grayer and whiter hair 2. more and deeper skin wrinkles 3. more susceptible to disease due to decrease of the immune system 4. sigh starts to decline 5. fertility declines
What causes stiffness of skin and joint pains?
Decreases in production of the connective tissue proteins collagen and elastin
How does the healing process differ with age?
Infants heal rapidly, often with no evidence of injury. Similar injuries in adults heal more slowly, and a scar is likely to persist throughout life.
What happens during aging at a cellular level?
- chromosome tips are reduced or destroyed 2. cells have fewer mitochondria which house the reactions that extract energy from nutrients 3. cells have fewer lysomes, which dispose of aged or damaged cell parts 4. Cells decrease their rate of division 5. red blood cell synthesis declines
What is Lipofuscin?
a brown granule found in the liver, kidney, heart muscle, adrenal and ganglion cells due to aging.
What is Ceroid?
a waxlike yellow or golden brown pigment found in the liver accumulates as cells can no longer prevent formation of damaging oxygen free radicals.
