Vocab 5: Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
What is Anatomical Position?
A person standing erect with the face, palms, and eyes directed forward, the feet flat on the floor and arms at the sides.
What is Supine Position?
Anatomical Position lying face upward
What is Prone Position?
Anatomical Position lying face downward
What is Anatomical Plane?
How the body is divided or sectioned
What are the 3 major anatomical planes?
- Sagittal (median) 2. Coronal (frontal) 3. Transverse (horizontal) planes
What is the Sagittal or Median Plane?
A plane running vertically through the body or organ and divides it into right and left portions (side view when cut)
What is a Midsagittal plane?
Also known as a Median sagittal plane. When the body or organ is divided evenly into to halves.
What is the Transverse or Horizontal Plane?
Runs parallel to the ground and divides the body or organ into Superior and Inferior portions.
What is the Coronal or Frontal Plane?
It runs vertically from right to left and divides the body or organ into Anterior or Posterior portions.
What does “Superior” mean?
a relative term replacing “above”, closer in relation to the head
What does “Inferior” mean?
a relative term replacing “below”, closer in relation to the feet
What is Anterior?
a relative term replacing “front”, or that which goes before.
What is Posterior?
a relative term replacing “behind”, or towards the back
What is Medial?
Relating to the the imaginary midline dividing the body into equal right and left halves. A part is medial if it is closer to this line than another part. ex: The nose is medial to the eyes
What is Lateral?
Lateral means toward the side with the respect to the imaginary midline. ex: The ears are lateral to the eyes.
