Petrarchan sonnet
otherwise known as an English Sonnet; this type of sonnet is a fourteen line poem that is divided into three quatrains and a heroic couplet
Shakespearean sonnet
poetry that is written without a rhyme scheme
free verse
rhyme that occurs when the last word or words of one line of poetry rhyme with the last word or words of another
End rhyme
when rhyme occurs within a line of poetry, as opposed to the end of the line
Internal rhyme
when an author uses poetic license to rhyme words that do not quite sound the same
Near rhyme
the first eight lines of a Petrarchan sonnet. Typically introduces a problem or question that is not answered or resolved
Octave
the last six lines of a Petrarchan sonnet. Typically responds to the problem or question that has been posed in an octave and attempts to answer or resolve it
Sestet
a four line stanza
Quatrain
two rhyming lines of poetry that share the same meter
Couplet
the moment, word or line in a sonnet in which a shift has been made between conflict and resolution
Turn
the measured pattern of stressed or unstressed syllables within a sing line of poetry
Meter
a five-foot line made up of unaccented followed by an accented syllable
Iambic Pentameter
a pause within a line of poetry, sometimes punctuated, sometimes not
Caesura
