Cross VS Hybrid
CROSS:
Intraspecific “whitin a species”
(Syrah x Peloursin= Durif/Petite Sirah) Both are from V. Vinifera
HYBRID:
Interspecific “between species”
(Folle Blanche x V. Riparia = Baco Noir)
What is a Cross?
When 2 varieties from the SAMEN species of vine “cross” to make new varietal!
It’s produced by fertilizing the flower of one varietal with the polen of other variety, and greats a new variety.
Can be natural or by human intervention:
Natural: Cabernet Sauvignon (Chardonnay&CF)
Human: Pinotage and Müller-Thurgau
What is a hybrid?
Hybrids are the same as crosses but the “cross” os between two DIFFERENT species of vines.
Normally made to improve the vine.
Ex.: Vidal, Baco Noir, Seyval Blanc.
What is a Clone?
Is a vegetative propagation of a single plant parent plant, and it process where individual vines are selected from a grape variety on the basis of certain attributes.
