Vital Signs Flashcards
2 parts of pulse oximetry
Monitor and probe
What does a pulse oximetry measure?
O2 saturation of hemoglobin in arterial blood, SpO2
Pulse rate in beats per minute, average over 5-20 secs
2 parts of probe
Light emitting diodes
Light detector
Factors that can interfere with pulse ox reading
Light Shivering Pulse volume Vasoconstriction Carbon monoxide
What is not measured by pulse ox?
Respiratory rate, tidal volume, cardiac output, blood pressure
Take temperature from?
Ear, mouth, temporal, axilla, rectal
Fever
Above 100.4f or 38 c
Normal respiration
12-20
Obstructive breathing
Prolonged expiration due to narrowed airways resisting air flow
Hyperventilate
Rapid deep breathing
Kussmaul breathing
Metabolic acidosis, can be slow, normal or fast
Cheyene-stokes
Deep breathing alternating with apnea
Biots
Unpredictably irregular breathing characterized by shallow, or deep, or stopped for short time respirations
Bisferiens pulse
Arterial pulse with a double systolic peak
Pulsus alter and
Pulse amplitude alternates from beat to beat while rhythm stays regular
