actinic cheilitis
excessive exposure to sunlight and affects lower lip; fair skin men who work in sun
Angular cheilitis
softening of lips, followed by fissures; nutritional deficiency; seen in people with no teeth
Herpes simplex
recurrent painful vesicular eruptions; heals 10-14 days
angiodema
localized subcutaneous or submucosal swelling, leakage of intravascular fluid; usually benign, resolves within 24-48 hours
hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia
small red spots on the lips, autosomal dominant endothelial disorder; in lungs or brain can cause life-threatening hemorrhage
Peutz-jerghers syndrome
small brown pigmentation around mouth
Chancre of primary syphilis
ulcerated papule; heal in 3-6 weeks
carcinoma of the lip
affects lower lip, scaly plaque, ulcer or nodule; prolonged exposure to sun
Exudative tonsillitis
White exudate on tonsils
Diptheria
rare acute infection; life-saving treatment needed; dull red with gray exudate; airway becomes obstructed
Thrush on the palate
yeast infection; white plaques; from prolonged antibiotic treatment, AIDS
Kaposi Sarcoma in AIDS
Deep purple lesions, raised or flat; antiretroviral therapy reduces
Torus palatinus
midline bony growth in hard palate; harmless
Petachiae
Small red spots from escape capillaries; infection or decreased platelets
Leukoplakia
Thickened white patch; from chewing tobacco; may lead to cancer
