Visual Pathways Flashcards
DRAW OUT VISUAL PATHWAY NOW
Use this every time you get asked a question on visual pathways
Describe where optic signals go after they pass along the optic tract
Pretectal nucleus -> Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EWN) -> gives signals to oculomotor nerve -> pupillary constriction/dilation
For each of the following defects state where in the pathway is affected:
- unilateral
- bitemporal hemianopia
- homonymous
- macula sparing
Unilateral = before chiasm
Bitemporal hemianopia = optic chiasm
Homonymous = optic tract
Macula sparing = 1 hemisphere
What is the name of the nuclei optic signals reach in the thalamus before become optic radiations into the visual cortex?
LGN
lateral geniculate nucleus
What side of the brain processes signals from R eye?
L visual cortex
What part of brain processes signals from superior visual fields?
What part of the brain processes signals from the inferior visual fields?
Temporal lobe = superior
Parietal = inferior
Superior processed lower in brain and inferior - higher in brain
