visual pathway Flashcards
how many neurons are in the visual pathway?
3 - from photoreceptor to cortex
where are the primary and secondary neurons located?
in the retina
what are the primary neurons?
the bipolar cells
what are the secondary neurons?
ganglion cells
how is the optic nerve formed?
axons of the ganglion cells run over the retina to optic disk/blind spot and form optic nerve - the optic nerve runs to the lateral geniculate nucleus of thalamus
which nucleus of the thalamus is involved in the visual pathway?
the lateral geniculate nucleus
what is the 3 neurone in the neurone chain of the visual pathway?
optic radiation - from thalamus to visual cortex
where is the striate cortex?
above and below the calcarine sulcus
where does the left half of visual field go to in the brain?
the left half the visual field goes to the right hemisphere
where does the right half of visual field go?
the right half of the visual field goes to the left hemisphere
which part of the visual field goes to the lower bank of the calcarine sulcus?
the upper visual field
which part of the visual field goes to the upper bank of the calcarine sulcus?
the lower visual field
where does the centre of visual axis (macula) go?
the occipital pole
what is a scotoma?
a localised patch of blindness
what is anopia?
loss of one or more quadrants of the visual field
