upper limb shoulder Flashcards
what components make up the pectoral girdle?
the clavicle and scapula
which muscles attach the scapula to the trunk?
rhomboids
levator scapulae
trapezoid
serratus anterior
what movements can the pectoral girdle do?
retraction protraction depression elevation rotation
what does the trapezius do?
rotate scapula during abduction of humerus
what does elevator scapulae do?
elevate scapula and rotate scapula medially
what does rhomboid major and minor do?
retract the scapula medially and superiorly
what does serrates anterior do?
protracts scapula and rotates it laterally
what happens if there is damage to the long thoracic nerve?
winged scapula - medial border and inferior angle pull away from thoracic wall
what is the shoulder joint
the glenohumeral joint = ball and socket joint between head of humerus and glenoid fossa of scapula
not very stable joint
joint = weakest inferiorly
what is a bursa
a fluid filled sac that reduces friction between tissues of the body
what is painful arc syndrome?
calcific bursitis - caused by inflammation of bursa after excessive use of joint - pain during 50-130 degrees of abduction
what are the rotator cuff muscles?
teres minor
infraspinatus
supraspinatus
subscapularis
what are the symptoms of a rotator cuff injury?
pain when arm is overhead and weakness
what is the result of excessive extension and lateral rotation of humerus?
dislocation of glenohumeral joint
which aspect of shoulder is weakest?
the inferior aspect of shoulder joint
