Vision Impact after Procedures Flashcards
What is a iridectomy?
removal/move of the iris
when is iridetomy (glaucoma surgery) used?
allows for flow of aqueous humour to release pressure of eye due to glaucoma
what is a trabeculectomy (filtration surgery) (glaucoma surgery)? 3
-small portion of the trabecular meshwork is surgically removed
-allows the aqueous to filter out of the anterior chamber
-Form a conjunctival bleb
How does the Laser Trabeculoplasty (glaucoma surgery) work ? 3
-An argon laser is used to
produce mild burns in the trabecular meshwork
-The trabecula shrinks mildly
-Which opens up the interspaces
in the meshwork
what is a sclerectomy(glaucoma surgery)? 3
-small button of sclera is removed with scissors or small punch
-treats open angle glaucoma
-permeant drainage
What is the Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)(glaucoma surgery)?
targets selected cells which triggers response to increase flow of aqueous humour
What are the two main types of corneal transplant (depends on what part of the cornea clouded) ?
-Lamellar Partial penetrating
procedure
-Penetrating or full-thickness
corneal transplant
What are the three Refractive Surgeries?
-Photorefractive -keratectomy (PRK)
-Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK)
-Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK)
How is PRK done?
epithelium is removed by
spatula or brush or
by using the laser to reveal Bowman’s
layer
what are the cons to PRK? 5
-Delayed epithelial healing
-Light sensitivity
-Corneal haze
-Overcorrection
-Under correction
How does PTK work?
Removal of tissue from the cornea to correct a medical problem with the eye
How is LASKIK surgery done? 4 steps
1) A thin flap of corneal tissue with a hinge is created
2) The flap is then retracted
3) The excimer laser is used to ablate tissue beneath the flap
4) The flap is repositioned
What is the con of LASIK?
Corneal ectasia is a rare,
potentially devastating
complication
What are the two main specific uses for Excimer lasers?
1) Eliminated or reducing refractive errors
3) Removing corneal scars, corneal dystrophies, stopping
recurrent corneal erosions and smoothing out corneal surfaces
What are the main types of Eyelid Surgeries?
- Entropion (eyelashes roll in and rub)
- Ectropion (eyelid rolls outward)
- Ptosis (eyelid droops to cover eye)
