Vision Flashcards

1
Q

Ungoed-Thomas (1996)

A

Vision should help inform and guide the moral development of students, should give a sense of what schools ought to be doing. When there is no vision, there are severe consequences in terms of moral, discipline, and a lack of drive for learning.

Schools should learn about: people, curriculum, community, citizenship. The accompanying ‘first virtues’ are: respect, truth, fairness and responsibility.

Q

Creemers and Reezigt (1999)

A

An educational vision not only describes goals to be achieved but the means by which those goals can be achieved. Means and goals must be integrated for educational outcomes to be affected. A vision should focus on the educational dimension, but be supported by the pedagogical, psychological, and sociological dimensions. They link the idea of vision to educational effectiveness.

Q

Noddings (2005)

A

Proposes an alternative vision which has at its centre the virtue of caring. We learn to care through the care we receive from young. Students should learn to care and appreciate many things, which leads to a more full life. Students’ unique cognitive capacities should be nurtured. Care is cultivated through caring teachers.

Wright (2001)

A

Coined the term ‘bastard leadership’ in reference to government setting purpose and direction, but then forcing principals to carry out the work, no room for personal vision…
