Vision Flashcards
Webers law
Ability to tell the difference gets more difficult as the magnitude of the stimulus increases
Difference threshold
The smallest difference between two stimuli that you can detect 50% of the time
Subliminal stimuli
Weak brief stimulus picked up by senses but doesn’t make it into your conscious awareness
Sensation
Process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energies from our environment
Perception
Process of selecting, organizing and interpreting sensations. Making sense of them
The absolute threshold
How weak a stimulus must be before we can detect it 50% of the time.
Ex: bright or dull light
Prime
Activation (unconsciously) of certain associations
Predisposing ones perception memory or response
Sensory adaption
When we are constantly exposed to a stimulus that does not change we become less aware of it. Neuron cells fire less frequently
Ex: smell
Perceptual set
Set of mental tendencies and assumptions that affects what we hear taste feel and see
Ex: looking at a saxophone player
Motivation and emotion
Angry people often see neutral objects as guns
Hill looks steeper with those carrying something heavy
Ball seeming bigger when you are hitting well
