Perception Flashcards
Top down processing
Bring knowledge memory experiences or expectations into it.
Ex: done the puzzle ten times
Construct perceptions drawing from experiences
Bottom up processing
Begins with Sensory receptors and works up the brains integration of the information. Small sensory features. Build onto them
Ex: puzzle for first time
Selective
Filter out stimuli. Focus on certain things. We pay attention to things that are threatening, new , different, unusual, moving
How we organize stimuli
Figure ground principle. Something always in the forefront. Standing out from the surroundings
Ex: vase and people picture
Gestalt principles
Integrate pieces of info into meaningful wholes
Grouping
Tendency to organize stimuli into coherent groups
Proximity
Group nearby figured together
Ex: a square not all connecting
Closure
Full in gaps to see a whole object
Continuity
Want to see smooth continuous patterns. Follow straight lines
Simplicity
Want to see the simplest way possible
Similarly
Want to see anything similar to eachother
Binocular cues
Depth cues that depend on the use of two eyes
Monocular cues
Depth cues available to each eye separately
Perceptual constancy
Perceiving objects as unchanging
Ex: door opening
Person standing in shade
Illusions
Relative height- perceive objects closer as shorter
Relative size
Linear perspective- parallel lines meeting in the middle
Light and shadow- provides depth
Interposition-overlap
