vertigo
nausea and vomiting

Not triggered by movement but exacerbated by movement
What can precede or be concurrent with viral labyrinthitis?
Symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection
How is the onset of symptoms of viral labyrinthitis described?
Acute onset
What are the main signs of viral labyrinthitis?
- spontaneous unidirectional horizontal nystagmus towards the unaffected side
- sensorineural hearing loss
- abnormal head impulse test
- gait disturbance

What can an abnormal head impulse test signify in someone with viral labyrinthitis?
An impaired vestibulo-ocular reflex

The patient may fall towards the affected side

History and examination
What is the management of viral labyrinthitis?
Episodes are usually self-limiting
What medication can be given to reduce the sensation of dizziness in someone with viral labyrinthitis?
Prochlorperazine or
Antihistamines
