Immunocompromised individuals (90% cases found in diabetics)
What is the most common cause of malignant otitis externa?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
How does the infection progress in someone with maligagnt otitis externa?
Soft tissues of the external auditory meatus, then progresses to involve the soft tissues and into the bony ear canal
What can malignant otitis externa progress to?
Temporal bone osteomyelitis
How can malignant otitis externa present?
Severe, unrelenting, deep-seated otalgia
Temporal headaches
Purulent otorrhea
Possibly dysphagia, hoarseness, and/or facial nerve dysfunction
How can malignant otits externa be diagnosed?
A CT scan
What is the management of malignant otitis externa?
Intravenous antibiotics that cover pseudomonal infections
What is the management of non-resolving of non-resolving otitis externa with worsening pain?
Urgent referal to ENT
