What is mastoiditis?
Infection spreads from the middle to the mastoid air spaces of the temporal bone.
What are the possible features of mastoiditis?
otalgia
History of recurrent otitis media
Fever
Very unwell
Swelling, erythema and tenderness over the mastoid process
Eternal ear protrudes forward
ear discharge
Where is the ear pain typically felt in mastoiditis?
Severe and behind the ear
When might there be discharge present in mastoiditis?
If the eardrum has perforated
How is mastoiditis usually diagnosed?
Clinically
What scan can be done for mastoiditis if complications are suspected?
CT scan
What is the management of mastoiditis?
IV antibiotics
What are the possible complications of mastoiditis?
facial nerve palsy
hearing loss
meningitis
