Viral Diseases Flashcards
Name the two types of viral disease
Measles
HIV
How is measles spread?
Measles is spread through droplets in the air from sneeze/cough which are trnasferred from a diseased person and inhaled by a healthy person, infecting them
What are the symptoms of measles?
Fever (high temperature)
Rash
What can happen to someone with a fatal case of measles?
They can get breathing problems or brain damage
Why is measles uncommon today?
Many people are vaccinated from measles at a young age
How is HIV spread?
From bodily fluids in unprotected sex
and from sharing needles with an infected person
What are the symptoms of HIV?
Flu-like symptoms for the first few weeks
How does HIV develop into AIDS?
Ifanitretroviral drugs are not taken, the HIV virus reproduces rapidly inside the patient’s body.
This causes cell damage and weakens the immune system
This means that the immune system can no longer easily fight off infections
This means that the patients can easily contract infectious diseases like TB or even cancer
At this point the HIV has developed into AIDS
What do antiretroviral drugs do?
Antiretroviral drugs stop the HIV virus from reproducing inside the patinet’s body so that it does not cause damage to the immune system
In this way, the HIV does not develop into AIDS and so the patient can have a normal life expectancy
What is the cure for HIV?
There is no cure
How can the HIV virus stop from developing into AIDS?
Antiretroviral drugs which stop the HIV viruses from reproducing so that they don’t damage the immune system
Antiretroviral drugs must be taken
_ _ _ _ ** ** _ _ by the HIV patient
fill in the blank
Antiretroviral drugs must be taken every day by the HIV patient
Why must antiretroviral drugs be taken every day by an HIV patient?
As they are not a cure for HIV.
If the patient forgets to take their antiretroviral drugs, the HIV virus will reproduce inside their body and damage their cells which damages their immune system.
This will mean that their immune system cannot easily fight off infectious diseases
So the patient now easily contracts diseases like TB or even cancer
At this point, their HIV has developed into AIDS
What must be exchanged for HIV to be transmitted from one person to another?
Bodily fluids
What can a man wear over his erect penis to prevent the transmission of HIV?
A condom
