Plant Diseases Flashcards
Name three plant diseases
Rose Black Spot
Tobacco Moasaic Virus
Aphids (insects) cause plant disease
Name the three ways that specific plant diseases can be identified
- Looking at a gardenin manual or website
- Going to a lab to identify the pathogen
- Using testing kits which contain monoclonal antibodies
Name two ion defficiencies found in plants
- Nitrate ion defficiency
- Magnesium ion defficiency
What is stunted growth caused by
A lack of the nitrate ion
What is chlorosis caused by
A magnesium ion defficiency
How does a nitrate ion defficiency cause stunted growth in plants
The nitrate ion is needed for protein synthesis which helps plants grow.
So a nitrate defficiency results in stunted growth
What is chlorosis?
A condition in plant leaves which causes leaves to turn yellow due to a lack of chlorophyll
How does a magnesium defficiency cause chlorosis?
Magnesium is used to synthesise chlorophyll
Without magnesium, there will be a lack of chlorophyll, which will cause leaves to turn yellow
State four things you may see to help you to detect a plant disease
- Discolouration
- Spots on leaves
- Stunted growth
- Presence of pests
