Non-specific Human Defence Systems Flashcards
Name the four sites of non-specific human defence systems
- Skin
- Nostrils
- Lungs
- Stomach
What do non-specific defence systems do?
They prevent pathogens from entering inside the body
How does the skin prevent pathogens from entering the body?
- The dead skin cells prevent pathogens from penetrating the skin so they cannot get inside the body
- The skin secretes sebum which kills bacteria
- When skin is damaged it scabs over so that pathogens cannot enter
What are our nostrils trying to prevent pathogens to enter into?
The breathing system
How do our nostrils prevent pathogens from entering the breathing system?
The hairs and mucus in the nostrils trap pathogens and prevent them from entering the breathing system
Which two structures in the lungs are part of the non-specific defense system?
- The trachea
- The bronchi
How do the lungs prevent pathogens from entering the breathing system?
The trachea and bronchi have hair-like cilia in them with mucus on them
The pathogens are trapped in the mucus and then the cilia waft the mucus up to the throat where it is swallowed and taken down to the stomach to be destroyed by the HCL*
*HCL- Hydrochloric acid
What is the stomach trying the prevent pathogens from entering into?
The digestive system
What are the lungs trying to prevent pathogens from entering into?
The breathing system
How does the stomach prevent pathogens from entering inside the body?
There is Hydrochloric acid in the stomach which kills pathogens found in food to prevent pathogens from entering the digestive system
