Communicable disease Flashcards
What is a pathogen
A microorganism that causes infectious diseases
How are diseases caused by bacteria?
Bacteria reproduces rapidly and asexually inside the body
They then release toxins which the damage cell tissue and make us feel ill
How do viruses make us feel ill?
Viruses bind to a host cell
They then inject their genetic material into the cell.
The virus then reproduces inside the cell
When the cell can no longer contain all of the reproduced viral pathogens, this causes cell damage and the cell will rupture
This releases more viral pathogens to bind to different cells and the process repeats.
How can we prevent the spread of pathogens?
- Wash your hands after being sick
- Isolate yourself
- Do not share towels
When is the only time when a virus can reproduce?
When in a host cell
Howare diseases are spread
In the air
In contanminated food/ drink
In direct contanct
How are diseases spreadin the air?
The droplets from sneezing and coughing can transfer from a diseased person and inhaled by a healthy person and infect them
How are diseases spread in contaminated food and drink?
Bacteria can be found in undecooked food
food can be cooked with poor hygeine
How are diseases spread with direct contact?
Through sexual intercourse,
skin to skin contact
fluids being transmitted by needles
Vectors
