Viral carcinogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
Which viruses can cause tumors
A
- HPV - Cervical carcinoma
- EBV - Burkitts lymphoma, hodkins lymphoma
- HBV & HCV - Hepatocellular carcinoma
- Retroviruses - Adult T cell leukemia
2
Q
How due Human papilloma virus (HPV) contribute to cancer development
A
HPV hits basal keratinocytes and express E7 and E6.
E6 degrades p53 –> no apoptosis, telomerase activation
E7 blocks pRb –> Cell cycle entry and proliferation
HPV also cause genomic instability and promote epigenetic changes. It also inserts its genome into the host genome
3
Q
HPV can exist in high and low risk, what is this
A
High risk means that the protein expressed by HPV have some differences compared to low risk and thereby higher affinity to bind to p53 and pRb –> bigger risk of developing cancer due to high risk HPV
