Cytomegalovirus Flashcards
Which cells do CMV target
CMV mainly infect monocytes, epithelial cells etc.
What happens when CMV infect a person
CMV infection can cause mononucleosis that the immune system can deal with and the virus become latent, however a immune suppressant person can have severe side effects
How do CMV become reactivated
Mechanism of reactivation
- primary infection
- Virus maintain latency
- During an inflammation or immune deficiency a lot of chemokine and cytokines are produced
- resulting in monocyte recruitment to the site of importance and they differentiate into Macrophages
- The virus uses the active Macrophage machinery to replicate itself
Normal people have memory cells that can deal with the reactivation, this is not the case for immunosuppressant people that get really sick
What can de outcome of CMV recurrence be in immunosuppressant individuals
Immunosuppressant patient aren’t able to produce IgM antibodies upon first infection, as normal individuals, thereby getting inflammation like state if the virus infect again or gets reactivated
- vascular disease
- Autoimmune diseases
- Cancer
