GI bacterial pathogens and host response Flashcards
1
Q
Which factors are bacterial pathogens dependent on
A
- Nutrients
- Oxygen
- pH
- Host defense factors
- Bile salts - Cholerae needs bile salt to turn on expression of colonization factors
2
Q
What is the pathogenesis of E.coli
A
Enterotoxigenic E.coli binds to the epithelial cells and deregulates ion channels, that completely opens up –> causing efflux of ions and water –> diarrhea
3
Q
What is the pathogenesis of Cholerae
A
Vibrio cholerae bacteria cause deregulation of ion channels –> efflux of ions and water –> diarrhea
Cholerae needs bile salt to turn on expression of colonization factors
4
Q
What is often the disease outcome of GI bacterial infection that also can be very lethal
A
Diarrea, third biggest cause of mortality in children <5 years
