What is protracted phonological development?
Phonological (speech) development hapens over a protracted period of time.

What does protracted mean?
Lasting for a long time or longer than expected or usual.
Why does protracted phonological development occur?
Because of challenges in one or more of :
- the representation of phonetic form
- processing of phonetic form
- articulation of phonetic form
Why say protracted phonological development instead of speech sound disorder?
Protracted phonological development has a more positive connotation for speech sound disorder, which focus attention on speech sounds rather than all the different parts of speech and uses the negative term disorder.
What are 3 signs of protracted phonological development?
- Speech / sign that is difficult to understand for the client’s age and sociolinguistic group
- Phonological awareness challenges or
- Literacy challenges

What is the Optimality Theory?
Constraints are ranked with respect to one another . Many rules can resolve one set of contraints. Which option you chose depends on the relative acceptability of the different options.
