Vet Prep Power Pages Pet Birds Flashcards
Chlamydophila psittaci aka Clamydia psittaci aka Parrot Fever is one of the most common diseases of companion birds. What is the transmission?
bacteria is shed in feces and resp. discharge
Reportable in some states
Tx abx (doxy)
In birds
— What bacteria is an obligate intracellular organism causing nasal and ocular discharge with the gold standard diagnosis being culture? How is it trans?
Avian Chlamydiosis AKA parrot fever; transmitted via bacteria in respiratory secretions or feces
What is this disease in house birds that is zoonosis in the way it
causes unapparent illness to severe pneumonia with inhalation being the primary route
Avian chlamydiosis aka C. psittaci
Most states require a vet and lab to report and positive cases of ….
Avian chlamydiosis aka C. psittaci which is aka parrot fever caused by bacteria in resp secretions or feces
what is the TOC for Avian chlamydiosis aka C. psittaci
Doxycycline (avoid giving with any calcium supplements because it will inhibit the absorption)
Vaccines are not available for what bird disease?
Avian chlamydiosis aka C. psittaci
What types of birds are prone to Essential amino acid deficiency
Cockatoo species are particularly susceptible, common CS include anemia and decreased muscle mass
Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD)
transmission is common by contact with contaminated feathers but feces and oral secretions are also reported, virus is stable in environment highly contagious
CS- feather loss and beak defects, immunosuppressive
Diagnosis is PCR or histo showing inclusion bodies in the skin and feathers
Prevention is vaccine and supportive care is the only tx
Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD)
Avian borna virus
macaw, cockatoos, and conure are most susceptible
CS are regurg, passage of undigested food, abdominal and crop distension, ataxia and tremors
Pacheco’s Disease
Herpesvirus, highly contagious and is most common in bird homes, transmission is direct contact and birds can be asymm. carriers of it
CS are green urates which indicate liver damage or no CS if asymm carrier
Virus isolation with hepatic inclusion bodies
Consider Pacheco’s disease in any psittacine that dies suddenly with no previous signs of illness
Polyomavirus
seen mostly in psittacine birds, delayed crop emptying and regurg, feather abn and petechia
diagnosis is Histopathology with viral intranuclear inclusion bodies in the liver, kidney, spleen,
heart and feather follicles
Birds can get avocado toxicity, what are the CS?
heart failure and respiratory compromise
Budgerigars are susceptible specifically
