Vessels and Circulation II Flashcards
What are the three major inferior bifurcations of the aorta?
common iliac artery, internal iliac artery, external iliac artery
What vein is used to receive blood from the external and internal iliac veins?
common iliac artery
The common iliac artery becomes what vein?
inferior vena cava
What direction does the inferior vena cava flow from?
inferior to superior
Blood from the GI system passes through the liver before going into what vein?
hepatic vein
What does the common carotid artery supply?
neck, face and anterior brain
What does the vertebral artery (and subclavian artery) supply?
posterior brain
What arteries supply the brain?
2 vertebral arteries, 2 internal carotid arteries
What arteries supply the head?
2 external carotid arteries
What arteries supply the neck?
2 external carotid arteries, thyrocervical trunks
Veins of the neck and face drain into what veins?
external and internal jugular veins
The brachiocephalic veins drain into what vein?
superior vena cava
What veins supply the brain?
dural sinuses to internal jugular veins
What veins supply the head?
internal and external jugular veins and vertebral veins
What veins supply the neck?
internal and external jugular veins
Where is the circle of willis?
around the sella turcica
What is the circle of willis composed of?
anterior and posterior cerebral and communicating arteries, internal carotid artery
What artery do intercostal arteries anastamose with?
internal thoracic artery
What vein do intercostal veins anastamose with?
azygous vein
What do the branches of the abdominal aorta serve?
diaphragm, GI tract, organs not part of the gut, body wall (lumbar arteries)
What does the superior mesenteric artery supply?
the small intestine
What is the hepatic portal system?
Venous network that drains the GI TRACT and shunts the blood to the liver for processing/absorption
Where does the blood exit the liver?
Through hepatic veins that merge with the inferior vena cava
What is the primary vein in the hepatic portal system?
hepatic portal vein
What does the splenic vein supply?
the spleen
Where does the external iliac artery go to?
lower limb (femoral artery)
Where does the internal iliac artery go to?
pelvis
What two veins in the arm are superficial?
cephalic and basilic
What is most medial artery/vein in the limb?
subclavian artery
What is the pathway of the artery in the limb?
subclavian -> axillary -> brachial -> ulnar/radial -> digital
What is the pathway of the veins in the limb?
subclavian -> axillary -> cephalic -> basilic/brachial -> mean cubital
The thoracic wall is supplied by what three sources?
axiallary, subclavian (internal thoracic), and aorta (intercostal arteries)
Are basilic veins medial or lateral?
medial; they are a continuation of the axillary vein
Are cephalic veins medial or lateral?
lateral; they are a continuation of the subclavian vein
Where does the inferior section of the femoral artery move to?
the back of the knee
Where is the great saphenous vein?
in the shin (anterior); it supplies superficial tissues and empties into the femoral vein
Where is the small saphenous vein?
in the shin (posterior); it supplies the leg and superficial lateral foot.
