Ventricular System Flashcards
What produces cerebrospinal fluid?
the chorid plexus
What is the largest ventricle?
the lateral ventricle
How many lateral ventricles are there?
2
What is the lateral ventricle a derivative of?
the telencephalon
What connects the lateral ventricle to the third ventricle?
the interventricular foramen
What is the third ventricle dervied from?
the diencephalon
What connects the third ventricle with the fourth ventricle?
the cerebral aqueduct
What is the cerebral aqueduct derived from?
the mesencephalon
What is the fourth ventricle derived from?
the mesencephaon, metencephalon, and myelencephalon
What is the lateral aperature?
the opening from the fourth ventricle to the subarachnoid space
What connects the fourth ventricle with the medulla and the spinal cord?
the central canal
What CNS structures are associated with the lateral ventricle?
the cerebral hemisphere
What CNS structures are associated with the third ventricle?
the thalamus and hypothalamus
What CNS structures are associated with the cerebral aqueduct?
the mid brain
What CNS structures are associated with the fourth ventricle?
the pons and medulla oblongata
What structures is the choroid plexus located in?
the lateral, third, and fourth ventricles
What lines the central canal?
ependymal cells
What is the function of cerebrospinal fluid?
it protects the CNS from injury when jolted or hit
What could cause cerebral edema?
absorption/circulatory problems of CSF
What does severe cerebral edema cause?
Increase in intracranial pressure leads to herniation of the cerebrum and subsequent compression of the midbrain which leads to the narrowing/blocking the cerebral aqueduct (aqueductal stenosis) to accumulation of CSF in the lateral and third ventricles which leads to further increase in intracranial pressure which leads to more narrowing
Where does build up of CSF occur if the cerebral aqueduct is obstructed?
in the lateral and third ventricles
What is the difference between CSF build up in adults and puppies?
puppies skull bones have not fused therefore it can lead to an enlarged head - hydrocephalous
