Pons Flashcards
What is the pons a derivative of?
metencephalon
What are the dorsal external pontine structures?
cerebellar peduncles
What is the function of the cerebellar peduncles?
they connect the cerebellum with the rest of the CNS
What is the ventral external pontine structure?
the basilar pons
What does the basilar pons give rise to?
the trigeminal nerve
What is the motor nuclei of the pons in charge of?
mastication
What type of sensory information comes into the pons and from where?
facial sensation - touch, vibration, and pressure from the trigeminal nerve
What is the pontine nucleus in charge of?
touch and vibration
What does the pontine nucleus send axons to?
the thalamus and cerebellum
What is the basilar pons made up of?
descending cerebral motor tracts
Where do the cerebral motor tracts of the basilar pons go?
midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata, and spinal cord
What is the path to activate the masticatory muscles (start from the basilar pons)?
cerebral motor tracts of the basilar pons to the motor nucleus of the trigeminal to the trigeminal nerve to the masticatory muscles
What type of somatic sensory function is the midbrain in charge of?
proprioception
What type of somatic sensory function is the medulla oblongata in charge of?
pain and temperature
What will a lesion to the pons cause?
motor and sensory deficits, loss of pain and proprioception, paresis and paralysis, and coma
