Midbrain Flashcards
What does the dorsal midbrain control?
visual and auditory reflexes, and the extraocular muscles
What does the tectospinal tract control?
body and ocular reflexes, and pupillary dilation
Where does the tectospinal tract originate at?
the tectum
What does the ventral midbriain control?
voluntary motor tracts to control the brain storm and spinal cord motor nuclei (crus cerebri) and some extraocular muscles
What is the tectum made up of?
the rostral and caudal colliculi
Where is the cerebral aqueduct located?
in betweem the tectum and tegmentum
What is located in the tegmentum?
reticular formation, motor and sensory nuclei
What motor nuclei are located in the midbrain?
nuclei of CN III and IV
What side of the body does the right nuclei of the trochlear nerve project to?
the left side
What motor nucleus is located in the medulla oblongata?
motor nucleus of the abducent
What are the extraocular muscles of the eye?
dorsal rectus, dorsal oblique, medial rectus, ventral oblique, ventral rectus, lateral rectus, retractor bulbi, and levaotr palpebral
What are the intraocular muscles of the eye?
pupillary sphincter muscles and ciliary muscles
What muscles does the occulomotor nerve control?
dorsal rectus, medial rectus, ventral oblique, ventral rectus, levator palpebral, and pupillary sphincter muscles
What muscle does the trochlear nerve control?
dorsal oblique
What muscles does the abducent nerve control?
the lateral recuts and retractor bulbi
What could a lesion to the midbrain cause?
motor and sensory deficits and coma
What would a lesion to the oculomotor nerve cause?
lateral strabismus
What muscles are affected in a patient that has lateral strabismus?
the dorsal and medial rectus
What would a lesion to the abducent nerve cause?
medial strabismus
What muscles are affected in a patient that has medial strabismus?
the lateral recuts and retractor bulbi
What does injury to the trochlear nerve cause?
the dorsal oblique is not functional
Which cranial nerve causes a lack of pupillary reflex?
the oculomotor
What muscle is not functional in ptosis and what CN is this associated with?
levator palpebrae superioris - oculomotor
