WRITE DOWN THE FORMULA FOR VENTILATION
When you breathe some of the gas gets stuck in the…..
conducting airways
The gas that is stuck in the conducting airways is called…..
Dead space ventilation
All the other gas that makes it into the alveoli is called
alveolar ventilation
If a giraffe and human both need 10L/min of alveolar ventilation, who has the greater total ventilation
The giraffe because the deadspace is longer in the giraffe meaning a longer conducting zone, so for any given breath in they waste more proportion of there tidal breath in the dead space
So in order to maintain an alveolar ventilation in comparison to the human, the giraffe is going to have to breath more, so the total ventilation is going to be higher in order to overcome that increased deadspace
How do we know if alveolar ventilation is sufficient?
Good level of O2 and CO2 in both the alveoli and blood stream
Arterial O2 content is in normal physiological range (i.e. 96-100% Hb saturated)?
Arterial CO2 is within a narrow physiological range (i.e. ~36-40 mmHg)
what is the Function of alveolar ventilation
process by which oxygen is brought into the lungs from the atmosphere and by which the carbon dioxide carried into the lungs in the mixed venous blood is expelled from the body.
What happens when alveolar ventilation is insufficient
CO2 volume goes up within body
*WRITE OUT THE ALVEOLAR
WRITE OUT THE ALVEOLAR VENTILATION FORMULA
How can we determine if alveolar ventilation is sufficient
if PACO2 value is within the normal physiological range (i.e. ~36-40 mmHg)
PACO2 =
This measures the pressure of carbon dioxide dissolved in the blood and how well carbon dioxide is able to move out of the body.
