Ventilation and Compliance Flashcards
What is the TV and what does it measure?
Tidal Volume; Volume of air breathed in and out of the lungs at each breath. (About 500ml)
What is the ERV and what does it measure?
Expiration Reserve Volume= Max vol of air that can be expelled at the end of a normal expiration.
What is the IRV and what does it measure?
Inspiratory reserve volume= Max vol that can be inspired in a normal breath.
What is RV and what does it measure?
Residual Volume= Volume of air in lungs at end of maximal expiration.
What is VC and what does it measure?
Vital Capacity= Tidal volume + inspiratory reserve + expiratory reserve volume
What is IC and what does it measure?
Inspiratory Capacity = Tidal vol+ inspiratory volume
What is anatomical dead space?
150ml- is volume of gas in conducting airways and not available for exchange.
What does hyperventilation do to gases?
Increases O2
Decreases CO2
What does hyporventilation do to gases
Decreases O2
Increases CO2
Why do we have surfactant?
Air inside alveoli is saturated (max water content)
Droplets like to stick together (rain on window)
This causes inward pressure.
Surfactant reduces this by getting in the way
Why is surfactant more efeextive in smaller alveoli?
Its more concentrated
How do you measure alveolar ventilation?
(Tv-150ml) multiplied by No of breaths per min
