Venous thromboembolism Flashcards
1
Q
what is virchow’s triad
A
triangle of cause for thrombosis
you can have 1,2 or all of the causes
the causes are stasis, hypercoagulability and vascular injury
2
Q
describe the coagulation cascade (extrinsic pathway)
A
extrinsic tenase kickstarts the clotting cascade by generating a fast burst of factor 10
factor 10 then generates thrombin
thrombin cleaves fibrin peptides fibrinogen and creates a stable fibrin plug
this is a very fast pathway
3
Q
describe coagulation cascade (intrinsic tenase)
A
consolidation of the plug occurs through the generation of thrombin through a slower pathway
calcium must be present
