Q

Why are vascular plants important?

A
  1. They are critical to supporting life on earth, including our own.
  2. They make up nearly all of our food crops, purify the water & air, provide fuel & give us essential materials like wood & fibre.

Q

Shoot System

A
  1. Consists of the stems, leaves, & flowers
  2. The stem serves as the structure for the positioning of the leaves - the principle site for photosynthesis
  3. The places where the leave join the stem is called the node
  4. The parts of the stem between the node are called the internode

Q

What are the 3 organs that vascular plants have to carry out their functions?

A

Roots, stems, & leaves
*All of the organs have specialized tissue for their own particular function; but, they all contain vascular tissue that forms an interconnected network

Q

How does the vascular interconnected network work?

A

The network extends from the leaves to the roots, & transports water & food (glucose) through the plant in a way thats similar to the circulatory system in mammals.

Q

What are the 2 types of tissues in vascular plants?

A

Xylem (carries water throughout the plant) & Phloem (carries water & sugars)

(they are to plants what veins & arteries are to humans)

Q

What are the 2 types of vascular plants?

A

Angiosperms (monocots & dicots) & Gymnosperms

  • > monocots have 1 cotyledon, w/ seeds that are in 1 piece like corn
  • > dicots have 2 cotyledon, w/ seeds that can split in half like peas

Q

Angiosperms (flowering plants)

A
  1. Are the dominant group w/in the vascular plant world
  2. The basic food supply comes from the seeds & fruits of angiosperms (rice, wheat, corn)
  3. The also produce fibres, wood, drugs, & other products
